Creating a national economy and infrastructure that enables citizens to work and produce to their full potential is becoming a reality for leading countries in West Africa. We witness the transformation in all sectors of society: education, agriculture, transportation, energy, health care, the rights of women, and many others.

National government policies and programs encourage the transformation. Elected leaders of the National Assemblies set the goals and provide oversight of critical programs. Among the many skills required of a National Assembly member, the ability to understand effective management of projects and programs is becoming more important.

Government-run projects and programs accomplish the goals set by elected leaders. Too often, however, these projects and programs fail to deliver. Budgets are exhausted before completing projects. Inadequate planning results in wasted effort. Bureaucrats initiate projects that don’t align with legislative goals.

Project management is a proven management discipline that is fundamental to the efficient and effective execution of any project. For large, publicly funded projects, it is even more important to apply time-tested management processes.

Legislative Leadership for Project Results is a course designed specifically for the elected legislators of West Africa that oversee public expenditures on projects. This course is developed and hosted by Eric Verzuh, one of the world’s leading authorities on practical project management. The course includes an executive presentation on key project management theory, plus tours and examples of public projects in and around Seattle, Washington, where legislators will see project management principles at work.

International partnership: Leading Edge Business School of Abuja, Nigeria, brought Mr. Verzuh to Nigeria in October, 2009.
